DNA Direct exists to help you, one-to-one, with genetics and your most important health questions. Our dedicated team of medical specialists can help you understand genetics, your family and medical history, and the genetic tests that may be of benefit to you.
How Our Process Works
- Identify a Genetic Test or Counseling Service. DNA Direct provides online tools and education to help you discover if a genetic consultation or test is right for you based on your family and medical history. You can email an expert (expert@dnadirect.com) or call 1-877-646-0222 to speak with a genetic counselor to find out more information.
- Pre-test Education.Pre-test education is provided at no additional charge through in-depth, online materials for all tests. Our genetic experts are available to answer any questions you may have by phone and email (expert@dnadirect.com).
For an in-depth review of testing options and a genetic risk analysis of your family and medical history by phone, you can order a pre-test genetic consultation with one of our experts.
Pre-test consultation is mandatory for certain testing areas (Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk, Infertility, and Recurrent Pregnancy Loss). After placing your order for these tests, you will be contacted to schedule a pre-test consult. The consult is included in your overall fee for these tests -- there is no extra charge. - Informed Consent.Genetic testing has both pros and cons. DNA Direct provides in-depth information on test accuracy, what to expect from testing, and how testing may impact your privacy, insurance, healthcare, emotions and family. Prior to all testing, we require your written, informed consent.
- Order a Test.To order a test, click on the Tests & Prices list below. Our medical genetics staff, under the oversight of our M.D. medical geneticist, will review your pre-test questionnaire and/or pre-test consultation and authorize your test. In some cases, additional information or counseling may be required to authorize a test. A test kit will be sent to your home.
- Return Your Kit to Our Lab Partner.DNA Direct uses only CLIA-certified labs with the appropriate state licenses to complete your testing.
Most test kits use a gentle cheek swab to collect cells containing DNA from the inside of your cheek. Simply follow the directions included in the kit, place the swabs in the pre-paid envelope, and mail your sample to the lab selected by DNA Direct.
Some tests can only be done on blood samples. If your test requires a blood sample, the kit will explain where you can get your blood drawn. The blood-draw facility will send your sample to the lab for you. - Get Your Results. We notify you by email when your test results are ready. You log on to your secure account to see your Personalized Report online. Your Personalized Report will explain your lab results in detail and discuss what they mean for you, personally. The original lab report, a letter for your physician, and information on how to talk to your family are also included. Our genetic experts are available by e-mail and phone if you have questions about your results. In some cases, your results may be reviewed over the phone before your Personalized Report is available.
Some tests results require post-test consultation (Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk, Infertility, Recurrent Pregnancy Loss). These test results are reviewed over the phone first, and after the consultation is complete, your Personalized Report is available.
If you prefer to receive a copy of your Personalized Report in the mail instead of in your secure accountonline, we would be happy to send it to you.
Personalized Reports
DNA Direct's Personalized Reports are easy-to-read, in-depth explanations of your test results and what you can do with them. We can build a Personalized Report for you even if you tested somewhere else. Our reports explain how your genes interact with other key factors — such as age, gender, lifestyle, and family history — to affect your personal health. Each Personalized Report has sections on:
- Your Test Results: What the lab found and what it means for you
- Disease and Gene Information: An in-depth review
- Your Next Steps: What to do now that you have completed testing
- Your Family (as appropriate): What your test results mean to family members, and how to talk with them about it
- Your Health Care: Putting together a personal health care team
- Your Doctor: A physician letter and how to talk with your doctor about your results
- Resources: Further reading and support services
