Testing for Drug Response
WARFARIN RESPONSE TESTING
Who Should Consider Warfarin Response Testing?
Anyone who is currently taking warfarin or may take it in the future can benefit from Warfarin Response Testing. The benefit is likely to be greatest before starting or during the first days of warfarin therapy.
If you are preparing to start warfarin therapy:
Although it is not always practical for everyone, this is the ideal time to have testing. Beginning warfarin therapy is when the greatest risk exists for complications such as bleeding. This is because no one can predict how you — with your unique combination of factors — will actually respond to warfarin until your response can be measured, tracked, and adjusted. While there is still some trial-and-error involved, genetic testing makes it possible to more accurately estimate a safe and effective warfarin dose from the start.
If you are currently taking warfarin or have in the past:
Your Warfarin Response test results may help explain why you responded to warfarin in a specific way — and possibly avoid complications in the future. If you have one or more gene variants, you are more likely to have experienced an adverse reaction, such as bleeding, when warfarin was started. People with CYP2C9 variants are also at increased risk for having difficulty maintaining a stable response to warfarin and also at increased risk for certain drug interactions.
You must remember that many factors in addition to genes influence warfarin response. If you have had a stable warfarin response in the past, then your dose was appropriate for you regardless of your genetic test results.
Also remember that your CYP2C9 results may have an effect on how you respond to other medications (and how they interact with warfarin). Learn more about other drugs affected by CYP2C9.
