THE CYP450 GENES

What Testing for CYP450 Drug Response Tells You

Test results can help your doctor find the right drug — at the right dose — for you.

If You Test Positive (Poor or Ultra Metabolizer)

If you have experienced adverse drug reactions or had medications that didn't work for you in the past, positive test results may explain why. Test results can also help your doctor select safer and more effective treatment for you in the future. Positive results can help you and your doctor:

  • Avoid medications that may be problematic for you (see Drugs to Test For )
  • Adjust the dose if you need to take an indicated medication. For example, Poor Metabolizers might need to reduce a dosage, while Ultra Metabolizers might need to increase a dosage.
  • Be alert for side effects and/or lack of therapeutic effects.
  • Be alert for drug-drug interactions. Taking two drugs at the same time that you cannot metabolize effectively, can cause a serious adverse drug reaction.
  • Be extra careful about taking medication during pregnancy and nursing. Medication that you take may affect your baby.

If You Test Negative (Normal Metabolizer)

"Normal" test results mean that you are likely to have a standard response to the standard dose of medications processed by these genes.

A normal result does not guarantee that a medication will always work for you, however. Each person’s drug response may be influenced by a number of factors, including their age, gender, liver and kidney health, other medications, lifestyle, environment, and other genes that have not yet been identified.
