Testing for Drug Response
THE CYP450 GENES
Who Should Consider Testing for CYP450 Drug Response?
Your drug response genes won’t change during your lifetime. Getting tested can help you proactively manage your health and medication choices. You and your doctor may be able to choose medications that are more effective and have fewer side effects.
You might consider genetic testing for drug response if...
- You have experienced several adverse drug reactions, or certain drugs don’t seem to work for you.
- You have chronic health conditions and need to take medications for an extended time, such as:
- You are taking tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer recurrence.
- You are taking warfarin (Coumadin®) for a cardiovascular condition.
- You are planning for a surgery or dental procedure for which pain medication, such as codeine, would be prescribed.
- You plan to take a medication with an FDA warning about gene interaction.
- You plan to start antidepressants, beta blockers, or antiarrhythmics, and want to save time and skip the trials spent finding the right drug and dose.
- You are from an ethnic group with a high prevalence of Poor or Ultra Metabolizers, such as Caucasian, Asian, Saudi Arabian or Ethiopian. (See ethnicity chart)
- You have a family history of adverse drug reactions.
