Screening Tests
COLOSURE (STOOL DNA TESTING)
Fast Facts: Colon Cancer
Colorectal cancer, in its early stages, is one of the most curable forms of cancer. Consider these facts and see why regular screening can save your life:
- When detected early, colorectal cancer is up to 90 percent curable. Yet, less than one-half of colorectal cancers are detected at an early stage, when they are most treatable.
- At least 60 percent of Americans age 50 and older have never been screened for colorectal cancer, even though there are a variety of screening methods.
- There are often no early warning signs or symptoms – you can feel great and still have colorectal cancer.
- Colorectal cancer is equal opportunity: it affects men, women, and people of all races.
- Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. Only lung cancer is more deadly. It is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in non-smokers.
- Over 90 percent of colorectal cancers occur in people over age 50.
- Every 9 minutes, an American dies of colorectal cancer – a preventable, treatable cancer if caught early.
- Greater than 50 percent of patients with colorectal cancer are diagnosed with advanced disease (when it has spread to the liver or lymph nodes), when their condition is less likely to be surgically curable.
- Each year, there are almost 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer. Each year, approximately 56,000 colorectal cancer-related deaths.
- Each year, 30,000 lives could be saved if colorectal cancers were detected at an early stage.
- About 75% of all newly diagnosed cases of colorectal cancer occur in people without risk factors, other than being age 50 or older.
- The death rate from colorectal cancer is dropping. This is partly due to people using screening methods that detect colon cancer earlier, when it is more treatable.
There's no doubt about it: regular screening saves lives!
