Screening Tests
COLOSURE (STOOL DNA TESTING)
Signs & Symptoms: Colon Cancer
Colorectal cancer usually develops from polyps, or growths in the colon, that over time become malignant (cancerous).
The most important thing to know is that colorectal cancer often exists without any symptoms. This is why regular screening is vital. Regular screening can find polyps at an early stage, either before cancer develops or when it is most curable.
The most common signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer are:
- A change in bowel habits that persists for more than four days
- A change in bowel habits, which may include diarrhea or constipation or decreased stool thickness ("pencil thin stools")
- A feeling that the bowel is not completely emptied after a bowel movement (also associated with inflammatory bowel syndrome)
- Blood — either bright red or very dark — in the bowel movement or on tissue paper
- Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas pains, or feelings of fullness (bloating)
- The feeling that there is a "lump" in the rectum
- Vomiting
- Chronic fatigue (due to anemia, for example) and unexplained weight loss (not due to dieting)
Many symptoms of colorectal cancer are also symptoms of other conditions or diseases. For this reason, it is important to see your doctor at the first sign of symptoms, so that an evaluation can be made.
