What Can I Expect During a Genetic Consultation?
Our board-certified genetic consultants are trained healthcare professionals who will:
- Discuss the genetic test(s) you are interested in learning about
- Complete a risk assessment by reviewing your personal and family medical history
- Provide important information about inheritance, testing management, prevention, resources and research
- Identify whether you are appropriate for genetic testing based on current medical guidelines
- Help answer your specific questions about the test(s)
- Help you consider what you would do based on genetic test results
- Offer clinical interpretation and support once testing is completed
Most medical questions are answered in about 30 minutes, but the counselor will speak with you as long as you need.

No Obligation to Buy a Test
With DNA Direct, there is never an obligation to buy a test. So feel free to call or email us with questions about the testing process and what to expect, for free. We only charge for questions about your specific medical concerns, and we will advise you if you need to speak to one of our board-certified genetic consultants. You will never be charged without your consent.

DNA Direct's genetic experts are available for consults Monday-Friday 9AM-5PM
Pacific Time. To schedule a consultation, call our Clinical Services
Department at 1-877-646-0222 or email expert@dnadirect.com with
"Request to Schedule a Consultation" as the subject line. If you are
emailing, please note the testing area for consultation, anything
special you would like to cover in the consult, and two or three times
that you are available for the consultation. Once we receive your
request, we will reply by email to
confirm the time of your consultation or to re-schedule in the event of
a conflict.
How to Prepare for Your Consultation
- Learn more about the genetic test or condition for which you have been referred.
- Talk to your relatives to get any relevant family history information, such as the age of a diagnosis, tests that have been performed, and specific genetic test results.
- Collect any of your medical records that are related to the genetic test(s), such as specific diagnoses, the results of previous testing, or pathology reports from biopsies or surgeries.
Consultation Rates
Pre- and post-test genetic counseling with DNA Direct's board-certified genetic counselors is $250 per hour. If you have had genetic testing through DNA Direct's clinical services, post-test consultation is included in your service fees.
If you are testing for Breast & Ovarian Cancer Risk,
Infertility, or Recurrent Pregnancy Loss through DNA Direct's clinical
services, a pre-test consultation is required and is
included in the price of testing. If after your consultation you choose not to proceed with
testing, you will only be charged for the
consultation and not the cost of testing.
