Why store DNA?

Genetic testing may provide important information about a person's cancer, chronic illness, unexpected miscarriage or stillbirth, or sudden death. When a patient is coping with difficult treatments or deep grief, testing may not be a priority, but delaying a test may mean an important opportunity lost. Simple, affordable DNA storage can preserve a person's DNA now, allowing patients and families the time to deal with more immediate priorities and consider genetic testing later.

DNA is the genetic history of a family, and storing DNA is a good way to prepare for the future by understanding the genetic contribution to the family of a deceased loved one.  Stored DNA can be used for:

How DNA Archive™ works 

1. DNA Direct will supply your practice with DNA Archive™ collection kits that you can distribute to patients. Each kit contains everything a patient needs: instructions, informed consent document, cheek swabs, mailing labels and return envelope. See kit.
   
2. To "activate" the kit, the patient calls DNA Direct at 1-877-646-0222, ext. 221 and makes payment. Then, the patient collects the cheek swab sample and mails it to the laboratory for extraction.
3. The DNA is preserved with SampleMatrix®, a synthetic medium that “shrink wraps” the DNA.
4. The preserved DNA is delivered to it's recipient in lab-quality tubes and UV-resistant packaging for safe, stable storage in perpetuity. Each sample contains ample DNA to perform currently available genetic testing for clinical genetics, identity, or ancestry. DNA Archive™ samples can be reconstituted by any lab using only a few drops of water.

Unlike DNA banking services, DNA Archive™ does not require yearly maintenance fees for freezing and off-site storage. Families will find peace of mind knowing that should they need it, their loved one’s genetic history is safe, confidential and within their reach.
