Instructions for Patients

Your physician has referred you to DNA Direct for genetic risk assessment and/or testing services. The process is simple, so please follow the instructions below.

DNA Direct exists to help you, one-to-one, with your most important health questions. Our dedicated team of medical specialists can help you before, during, and after the testing process.

Our comprehensive services include in-depth information, risk assessment, Personalized Reports, and support services by board-certified genetic specialists – for patients and physicians. Our website provides convenient access to reliable information.

Before testing:

Before you begin the testing process, there is important information that you should know and some questions that DNA Direct needs to ask you in order to provide you with the most accurate test results interpretation.

Whether you are on the DNA Direct website or speaking with a genetic counselor, you will walk through important information (for more details go to What Can I Expect During a Consultation?):

  • What can testing tell you?

Options for Placing Your Order With DNA Direct

If you are an Internet user:

  1. Visit DNA Direct: www.dnadirect.com.

  2. Go to Tests We Offer and select the test or condition that your doctor recommended for you. Read the information provided.

  3. Complete a Questionnaire some basic information about your personal and family history

  4. Register with DNA Direct (requires an email address and password of your choice).

  5. If your doctor has recommended testing, you can order the test by completing the billing and shipping information. Skip this step if you have been referred for genetic counseling only.

  6. Schedule a pre-test consultation:
    • Contact a DNA Direct genetic counselor at 1-877-646-0222 (M-F, 9-5, pacific
      OR
    • Use the online Schedule a Consultation tool (under Health Tools) to select a time that is convenient for you.

If you are not an Internet user:

  1. Call to schedule a pre-test consultation with a DNA Direct genetic counselor at 1-877-646-0222 (M-F, 9-5, pacific).

  2. One of DNA Direct’s genetic counselors will speak with you by phone to review important information and complete the process above.

Sample Collection:

  1. DNA Direct will send you a test kit in the mail.

  2. Read the enclosed Informed Consent Form and return it to DNA Direct to authorize the testing process.

  3. Collect the DNA sample – either using the cheek swab kit or by visiting a local Patient Service Center for a blood draw.

  4. Send the sample to the testing lab in the FedEx envelope provided. (For blood samples the PSC will send the sample for you.)

Your Test Results:

  1. Once testing is complete, DNA Direct will:
    • Send your test results and interpretation to your physician.
      OR
    • Contact you to let you know that your Personalized Report is available.

  2. Login to your DNA Direct account to view your Personalized Report.

  3. Contact DNA Direct with any questions, at any point.
