Diabetes Risk (deCODE T2™)

At risk for diabetes? Take preventive action

Many major risk factors for diabetes are well known being overweight, poor diet, lack of exercise — and some risk factors are genetic, whether you have a family history or not. These risk factors add up: the more risks you have, the greater your overall risk for diabetes.

You can take action to lower your risks, if you know what your risks are.

A brand-new test, deCODE T2™, will tell whether you carry a genetic marker known to substantially increase the risk for type 2 diabetes.* If you do, studies show that you can help prevent diabetes through diet, exercise and/or medication.

If you're on non-insulin medication to control blood sugar...

Not all people respond to medication in the same way. What works for some doesn’t work for others. In the past, health care providers have used trial-and-error to find the best medication for you. The deCODE™ test can help your physician determine the best medication for you, reducing the trial and error.

Studies have shown that sulfonylurea drugs (such as Amaryl, DiaBeta, Diabinese, Dymelor, Glucotrol, Glynase PresTab, Micronase, Orinase, Tolinase) work less well in people who have the T2 marker. Metformin drugs, however, are not affected by the T2 marker.

deCODE T2™ looks for a unique genetic marker that has been validated by independent researchers in studies of tens of thousands of people all around the world.

*Note: Researchers continue to search for other genes involved in type 2 diabetes.
